Need to export lots of images from your edit but don’t want to sit there manually doing it?

Well simply drop markers in your fcpx timeline, export an fcpxml file, and fcpxImageExporter will do the rest!

Version 1.0 of fcpxImageExporter simply sources the material that is in the timeline and exports those frames that are marked with markers.
So unfortunately at the moment any effects etc.. and generators that are applied will not appear
Also the output size of the image at the moment is the original material’s res.

Check out Larry Jordan’s review of fcpxImageExporter!

v1.1.0 released!

v1.1.0 (build 4) – improvements working with retimed clips (or clips with different frame rates), and multiple lanes (tracks). Added the ability to create directories.

v1.0.9 (build 4) – more issues fixed, more to come!

v1.0.9 – issues fixed, better support for handling of clips with timecode offsets

v1.0.8 -support for Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks), user alert when a file or destination directory hasn’t been selected

v1.0.7 – fixed a bug when the app would crash on load or reading an xml file. Added the ability to resize the window to read the full path of the files.

v1.0.6 – no longer exports markers from inside compound clips, other errors resolved

v1.0.5 – only exports images based on viewable markers, updated interface, custom filenames, stability, export log (drawer)

v1.0.3 – deployed for Mac OS X 10.7, ability to select files/directories via NSOpenPanel,

v1.0.2 – fixed issue with filepaths containing whitespaces

v1.0.1 has been released to squash an issue with media containing a timecode track. Hopefully this helps!

Just export FCPXML, drag that file on to the app with a destination and away you go. […]

Hi Adam, I appreciate the work you’ve been doing on this little app, it will be very useful once you get the wrinkles ironed out. What exactly do you mean by “Only exports images based on viewable markers”?

Also, have you any idea what you’re going to need to do to make it work with a milticam timeline?

    Reply
    • adam
      17 October, 2013

Hey Ron, yes apologies for that explanation!

What I was trying to say is that if your sequence is full of clips that already have markers, or the markers are somewhere on the clip but are no longer visible in the edit – these would have exported before as images – but now I have got around that so that only the markers that are visible in the timeline are exported as images.

      Something like that!

I’m hoping to get some time in the next few days to expert with perhaps colour corrections on clips – or compound clips – but that is some heavy stuff from what I have gathered so far. I’ll try to keep this conversation going!

    Hey Christophe!
    Thanks for your feedback.
I’m not sure why it won’t run on 10.7 as it has been deployed for that version of Mac OS X.
Does it give an error or simply doesn’t launch?
Interlaced footage – not sure! If you have the time would you be able to upload a 5 second piece of your material somewhere and I can test it out.
    Thanks mate!

      Adam,

I have now upgraded to Mavericks. I had some crashing issues on Lion with both 1.0.3 and 1.0.6, but this doesn’t arrive anymore since 1.0.8 on Mavericks. :-)

But, still one problem : markers placed on interlaced footage don’t export as stills.
No crash or anything, the program says ‘operation done’ but I miss a few markers.
All the missing ones were whose placed on interlaced footage.

Here are 5 secs footage from a SONY XR500 camera (H264, interlaced with upper field first).
Hope you’ll manage to fix it : https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1933742/Interlaced.mov

BTW thanks for the quick and responsive work.

Sadly with this version I have most of the time a crash while loading the fcpxml, or sometimes when it doesn’t crash, the program says “export complete” but nothing has been made.
Worst thing : now that I have crashed 1.0.9, even the 1.0.8 doesn’t work anymore, or also crash. I will try a reboot to se if 1.0.8 can work again.

Just so you know, my FCPX projects are organized into sparse images. Do you think it could be a problem for your program to find the footage in that case or something ? Just an idea.

Thanks again for your efforts, sorry to not bring the good news. If you want, I can make a screencast of what happen. Keep going the good work ! ;-)

            Hi Christophe!

No problem, I will try to work out what is going on.

What do you mean by “FCPX projects are organized into sparse images”?

If you can make a screencast that might help me a lot. In the “drawer” of fcpxImageExporter does it give any error for each marker?

I was able to export your interlaced Sony XR500 material as images today.

            Thanks!

Hi Adam, great idea. I often export still and it does take too much time so was excited to hear about your app.

I just downloaded 1.06 and was keen to try it out. However I even though get the status “Export Complete” in the main window, in the secondary window next to each marker the status in “unexported” which is actually the case – no images. I’ve tried all 3 formats. I am running OSX 10.7.5 with FCPX 10.0.9 exporting 5D3 DSLR footage. Hope the feedback helps you in some way.

OK, 5 min video quickly made (sorry for french accent) ! Don’t know if it’ll help but there it is :
      https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1933742/FCPXimgexporter.mp4

What I can add to it :
      - I put FCPXimgexporter program in a subfolder of /Applications called FCPX Tools, can it be a problem ?
      - I also renamed the program “FCPX Image Exporter” (with blank spaces), can it be a problem to not keep it with the original name of the archive you provide ?
      - When the program doesn’t crash, and says “Export complete”, I have no markers nor message in the drawer, the drawer remains empty ; after that, if I close the program to make a new try (clicking the red dot of the window), I have noticed the program disappear but its icon stays in the dock, and if I click on this icon, the window doesn’t come back on screen. So I have to right-click on the dock, choose “close”, and then double click again on the program. That’s another thing I wanted to report.

Hope it’ll help. Keep me updated, you have my mail.

I have a very long timeline with many markers, wenn I drag the xml, the app crash…After deleting many Markers some xml´s work. So I have to go backwards deleting markers to get an xml which works…

I´m hopping for an working version…I also would pay for it.

    Hey Swen,

Please try the latest build (4) of v1.0.9

I’m now aware of more of the limitations of the current version of the app.

Hopefully now you should have almost no trouble with a timeline that only has clips on the primary storyline.

The little development roadmap ahead looks like this:
    1. supporting multiple tracks/lanes
    2. supporting compound clips
    3. supporting timecode print over the images
    4. supporting colour corrected clips
    5. recreating what is visible in fcpx (a huge challenge!)

    Hey guys,

Just a quick note to say that any fcpxml originating from fcpx 10.1.x uses a new element to describe any conform rate a clip may have.

“Note: In FCPXML v1.3, some attributes and elements have been renamed or removed. Take care if you plan to support both v1.3 and earlier versions. In particular, the element is replaced by the and elements, depending on the type of the filter. Also the element representing rate conforming (with the rateConform attribute) is replaced by the element. Refer to the DTDs for prior versions in “Appendix B: FCPXML Version 1.0 DTD,” “Appendix C: FCPXML Version 1.1 DTD,” or “Appendix D: FCPXML Version 1.2 DTD” for specific changes.”

Actually it looks like the new attribute is “conform-rate” not “conformRate”.

I’m looking into addressing this now. Time-remapping looks like it might be the same, will have to test it out.
